Electronic mailing lists (sometimes called "listservs") are special-interest discussion groups run by e-mail. They're a terrific way to schmooze with other journalists or track areas you cover. But beware: A lively list can clutter up your inbox in a hurry. Here's more information on finding and using mailing lists.

Journalism Usenet Groups

Newsgroups are Internet-based special-interest discussion groups. They are free, unmoderated, and usually highly specialized (for instance, one might cater to photographers, another to freelancers, another to copyeditors). You can read them online rather than as separate e-mail messages. I never use newsgroups myself, but these sites list what's available:
